Santo Hospital Civil
Elderly home refurbishment.
The original building by architect Eladio Laredo dates back to 1910 and is part of the heritage buildings in the town of Castro Urdiales.
Since its construction, the building has undergone various periods of use and management, ceasing to be a hospital to become a residence for the elderly. These changes have involved architectural transformations in the building in order to adapt it to different program and occupation requirements, as well as to technical requirements to upgrade the facilities. The successive extensions and reforms have not always been carried out under an overall vision, giving rise to an unsatisfactory and somehow confusing result for the functionality expected of a collective residence.
The refurbishment seeks to remedy the detected deficiencies. Aware of intervening in a listed building, a symbol of the modernization of the municipality at the beginning of the 20th century, we proposed to reorganize the program to restore the logic and functional dignity that the building still retains beneath the layer of erratic additions.
Once again, colour is used as an integrating tool in the reuse strategy.
