Modular nursery school building
The subject of two parallel competitions was the design and development of a two- storey nursery school building (type 60 plus - 60 children/120 children), which can be built quickly and ecologically throughout Berlin in different urban contexts due to its high degree of prefabrication and its modular timber construction.
Various basic modules that can be arranged in different building figures (bars, L- and U- shapes) were developed. The entrance area is situated at the corner of the structure enabling access both from the long and the short side. Due to its typology, the structure can be connected to the corner or the long side of existing buildings which allows for the integration into various existing building compositions.
The central hallway, which is also used as playing area, forms the backbone of the building. A module for group rooms is situated on one side of the hallway and a module for functional rooms as well as an entrance module are situated on the other side. The sanitary areas in the group room modules are arranged in such a way that in front of each pair of group rooms there is a shared “forecourt” with a cloakroom as a hallway widening. Two group rooms and two adjoining rooms can be connected to form one large room.
The system building is developed as a construction kit from large prefabricated wooden elements. Load-bearing interior walls and ceilings made of prefabricated solid wood form the constructive backbone of the building. The outer walls were designed as wooden skeletons and on the front sides as wooden frame elements. The closed areas are clad with pre-greyed larch wood profiles. The wooden wall and ceiling surfaces were left visible wherever possible and the built-in furniture was designed as a wooden structure. Only materials that have a high level of health and environmental compatibility and a long service life were used.
The modular nursery school buildings type 60 plus were planned for 11 different locations in Berlin. The variant for 120 children has now been completed in four locations. The construction time for the wooden shell of the building has been gradually reduced from seven to just five weeks from the first to the fourth building.
