Wooden Atelier
Separated from the existing house, an abstract prism is located in the backyard.
An architecture project for storing, displaying and producing art works.
Its spatial dimensions are based on geometry and golden ratios.
Imagined based on the beauty of wood, its prefabrication and the atmosphere that this material creates, closely related to artistic work.
The wooden structure is key to the project, as a single section and material is used throughout the project to configure the interior space and the structural system, using simple or compound sections.
Two paired 3” x 4” sections in grapia wood were used for the main beams to transfer the structural loads to the columns, separated 1m from each other.
The entire structure is covered in 18mm plywood panels achieving a continuous surface on the outer facade, on which the geotextile membrane is placed as a water-repellent insulation, protecting the wood from any contact with water. Additionally, these panels help the structure become rigid to resist lateral forces of wind or earthquakes. That way, the entire structure becomes visible from the interior space, defining the expression of the proposal.
The object is covered by a pre-painted white sinusoidal sheet metal, which is detached from the interior enclosure through a special structure of steel angles and 2’’ x 3’’ secondary beams. This way, it allows air circulation, optimizing bio-climatic resources for temperature control through passive systems guaranteeing interior comfort.
The proposal is also detached from the ground though delicate metal pieces to avoid the contact of the wood with the humidity of the soil.
Using a simple and basic technology, the project is a succession of wooden frames for an artist that desires a space to store her most precious works.
