House Pynaertkaai
Close to the city centre of Ghent, an empty plot enclosed on both sides by the river is found. The project forms the link between a single-family house on the left and an apartment building on the right. A public green space is provided at the rear side of the plot.
The house, consisting of four floors, is pulled backed from the street on the ground floor , where a small front garden area also serves as a bicycle storage. A light metal structure is placed to align the façade with its neighbours and thus serving as a border between public and private.
On the ground floor the kitchen area is overlooking the river , while the dining room is connected to the backyard. By placing the staircase on the opposite side of the entrance hall, the open floor and its connection towards the outside is enhanced. On the first floor the staircase is rotated , dividing the living room in a sitting area and home office. The second floor holds a spacious bedroom , bathroom and a laundry room. The third floor houses two smaller bedrooms and a roof terrace from which natural light can penetrate deep into the house.
