SAND AND SALT EMBRACE
Arriving at the beautiful beach of San Miguel, in Cabo de Gata, we find an old defensive tower that stands alone between the sea and the mountains, between waves and sand.
Arriving at the beautiful beach of San Miguel, in Cabo de Gata, we find an old defensive tower that stands alone between the sea and the mountains, between waves and sand.
Time has been in charge of surrounding it with a series of architectural elements that, far from enhancing the heritage value of the tower itself, together construct a disorderly landscape of scant architectural interest. We have, for example, the perimeter wall added in the 80s, which confines the monument and hides it unnecessarily, giving it a prison aspect. We also have the nearby chiringuito, of a null architectural value, that approaches the tower irreverently. Finally, we found a parking area for vehicles completely improvised.
The objective now is to recover the Tower and give it the value it deserves. For this, our proposal tries to solve all those negative aspects that we have mentioned-eliminating the residual wall, ordering the traffic of vehicles and people and interposing between the chiringuito and the tower- while generating a quality architectural complex whose main purpose is to value the architectural piece of the Tower itself and integrate into the peculiar and beautiful landscape of Cabo de Gata.
To do this, a new architectural piece is inserted, a contemporary piece that is distinguished by forms and materials of the tower itself, which contains the main uses of the Tourist Office and introduces a route that has its beginning on the ground floor of the Tower, which is enabled as a hall.
To guarantee the integrity of the monument, the intervention proposes a minimal intervention in the torreon itself, which consists basically of eliminating all those additions of low architectural quality that were carried out during the final decades of the 20th century and acting only in those parts that compromise the life of the building. All the actions proposed by this project are based on the Krakow Charter of the year 2000.
Among the most important elements of the restoration, we can find:
1_Elimination of the plaster applied in the 80s, for which brick was used as filler material in those interstices where the original walls had lost mortar. It must proceed to the replacement of that gravel by suitable materials for that purpose in finishes that do not alter the aesthetics of the tower.
2_ Work of conservation of the interior spaces, which will be finished with self-supporting panels of plasterboard that do not touch the walls of the tower itself. The vault will be seen and illuminated by a perimeter system of hidden lighting and integrated in the backyard of plasterboard.
3_ Restoration work on the exterior staircase, which will be repaired structurally and finally covered with a new white plaster, a finish that will contrast with the original stones that remain, which will remain uncoated and in sight, after proper maintenance that they require.
4_Substitution of the platform that joins the staircase and the tower with a new one of better quality, also finished in a white that geometrically and visually is distinguished from the original materials of the tower.
Abrazo de arena y sal
Al llegar a la hermosa playa de San Miguel de Cabo de Gata, nos encontramos un antiguo torreón defensivo que se alza solitario entre el mar y las montañas, entre olas y arena.
El tiempo se ha encargado de rodearlo con una serie de elementos arquitectónicos que, lejos de potenciar el valor patrimonial de la propia torre, construyen en conjunto un paisaje desordenado y de escaso interés arquitectónico. Tenemos, por ejemplo, el muro perimetral añadido en los años 80, que confina al monumento y lo oculta innecesariamente, otorgándole un aspecto carcelario. Tenemos también el chiringuito próximo, de un valor arquitectónico nulo, que se aproxima de forma irreverente al torreón. Por último, encontramos una zona de aparcamiento para vehículos completamente improvisada.
El objetivo ahora es recuperar el Torreón y darle el valor que merece. Para ello, nuestra propuesta trata de resolver todos esos aspectos negativos que hemos mencionado -eliminando el muro residual, ordenando el tráfico de vehículos y personas e interponiéndose entre el chiringuito y la torre- al tiempo que se genera un conjunto arquitectónico de calidad cuya principal finalidad es poner en valor la propia pieza arquitectónica de la Torre e integrarse en el peculiar y bello paisaje de Cabo de Gata.
Para ello, se inserta una nueva pieza arquitectónica, una pieza contemporánea que se distingue por formas y materiales del propio torreón, que contiene los usos principales de la Oficina de Turismo e introduce un recorrido que tiene su comienzo en la planta baja de la Torre, que se habilita como vestíbulo.
Para garantizar la integridad del monumento, la intervención propone una intervencíon mínima en el propio torréon que consiste básicamente en eliminar todos aquellos añadidos de baja calidad arquitectónica que se llevaron a cabo durante las décadas finales del siglo XX y actuando tan sólo en aquellas partes que comprometan la vida del edificio. Todas las acciones que propone este proyecto tienen su base en la Carta de Cracovia del año 2000.
Entre los elementos más importantes de la restauración, podemos encontrar:
1_Eliminación de los revocos aplicados en los años 80, para los cuales usaron restos de ladrillo como material de relleno en aquellos intersticios donde los muros originales habían perdido mortero. Se debe proceder a la sustitución de ese cascajo por materiales adecuados para dicha finalidad en acabados que no alteren la estética de la torre.
2_Trabajos de conservación de los espacios interiores, que irán acabados con paneles autoportantes de cartón yeso que no lleguen a tocar los muros de la propia torre. La bóveda quedará vista e iluminada por un sistema perimetral de iluminación oculto e integrado en el trasdós de cartón yeso.
3_Trabajos de restauración de la escalera exterior, que será reparada a nivel estructural y finalmente revestida con un nuevo revoco color blanco, acabado que contrastará con las piedras originales que quedan, las cuales quedarán sin revestir y a la vista, después de los debidos trabajos de conservación que requieran.
4_Sustitución de la plataforma que une la escalera y la torre por una nueva de mejor calidad, también acabada en un blanco que geométrica y visualmente se distinga de los materiales originales de la torre.
