APARTAMENTO EM ALFAMA
The 55 sqm apartment presents a not so common typology where the kitchen area stands in the middle of the house and works like a hallway, connecting all the remain spaces through it.
There are also some significant elements like brick walls, some underdimensioned heights, wooden doors and ceilings in a general old construction in alfama, lisbon's ancient neighborhood.
The intervention kept walls and spaces in their original location, and took advantage of their connection, using all the existing doors and creating other openings when necessary. like this it's easy to change one area's function from living room to bedroom, updating the house to their inhabitants needs.
the kitchen was organised to create a more clear division between the functional cooking zone and the circulation area. the cooking zone is completely visible and is basically composed by a large marble kitchen counter that works almost like a piece of furniture in the house.
Although nothing was demolished, it was a concern to visually separate (but combine) the intervention from the existing part, through fresh and somehow contemporary materials: the white/grey marble and the yellow epoxi painted floor both used in the wet areas. The yellow color is to help to reflect natural light.
