Exhibition Space in Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center
Turning a narrow 60-meter long passage into a pop-up photo gallery to display works of the American photographer Philippe Halsman
The main challenge of designing the exhibition of the American photographer Philippe Halsman was to turn the transit space inherently ill-suited for exhibition purposes into a gallery.
A narrow 60-meter long passage was furnished by the Jewish Museum management as a supplementary exhibition space, so it was on designers to turn it into something functional and comfortable both for displaying artworks and enjoying them. Pink-coated wallboards were inserted into the passage; parallel to the main walls, they “break” suddenly to cross each other and create cruciate arches. The enfilade divides what used to be a bland corridor into a series of cosy rooms which adds dynamic to the space’s choreography and a twist to the exhibition's narrative.
