MADRID REGIONAL CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
Teatros del Canal was awarded the National Prize for Architecture in 2008.
Eight years from its inauguration can be said that this new Art Center has helped to revitalize the central district of Madrid Chamberí and turned into a city cultural landmark.
The Canal Theatre of Madrid settle on a plot at the confluence of the streets Cea Bermudez and Bravo Murillo, in the central district of Madrid Chamberí. The intent of this project was to create an artistic and architectural landmark in the city, as well as to satisfy the city’s need for a modern performing arts space. Architect Juan Navarro Baldeweg, Professor of Projects at the School of Architecture of Madrid (ETSAM), is the author of this project, which was sponsored by the Canal de Isabel II.
The theater complex is composed of three distinct parts in the architectural sense, functionally and structurally: the Red Hall which is the main theater and sits in the center of the building the configurable Green Hall for its ability to be modulated and change of disposition the Dance Center (CDC), which houses nine dance classrooms.
The last two hall are located on both sides of the central volume, the main theatre the Red Hall.
These three spaces are connected by a dorsal corridor, that also gives access to the dressing rooms, the offices, the workshops rooms, and the cafeteria. The three halls share at the basement level a space for storage and parking.
The articulated facade of the building is composed of glass curtain walls hanging from the top of the building structure. The transparent glass facade blends with a composite opaque glass and matte appearance in the color black, red and silver.
In a building of strong steel and concrete structures, have been used maple wood for paneling in the hallways, classrooms and offices, granite wall and flooring.
