Gas Station Next to the Highway
The order proposes the construction of a services area next to the highway that links Cantabria, in northern Spain, with the center of the country, in a mountainous area bordering the Castilla y Leon region.
The project aims to reclaim the possibility of creating architecture in a building type, such as gas stations and services areas, in which the final image is usually the nondescript visible residue of the engineering process.
There is a wish to be sensitive to the environment of the surronding mountains, through a set of sloped roofs which underline the broken horizon profile. At the same time, the porticos over the refueling areas are the threshold that leads the driver to the Cantabrian Campoo region, that looms in the distance. Restauran and store are organized in separated buildings, which favors a more fragmented image and reduces the scale of the building in relation to the environment. The inner image of the buildings seeks an industrial ambient using polished concrete floor slabs, not rendered brick walls painted and installations in sight on the surface. Wood decor is the warm counterpoint and the echo of the dialogue established between the indoor and the outdoor landscape. This has allowed the execution of civil works, urbanization and installations with a very tight 1,000,000 € budget, taxes not included.
GASOLINERA JUNTO A LA AUTOVÍA
El encargo propone la construcción de un área de servicio junto a la autovía que une Cantabria, en el norte de España, con el interior del país, en una zona montañosa limítrofe con la comunidad de Castilla y León. El Proyecto pretende reivindicar la posibilidad de crear arquitectura en una tipología edificatoria, como la de las gasolineras áreas de servicio en las que la imagen final suele ser el anodino resíduo visible del proceso ingenieril. Hay una voluntad de sensibilizarse con el entorno de la montaña palentina, mediante un juego de cubiertas inclinadas que subrayan el perfil quebrado del horizonte. A la vez, los pórticos sobre las marquesinas de repostaje son el umbral que da paso al conductor a la comarca del Campoo cántabro que se vislumbra en la lejanía.
Se separan los usos de hostelería y tienda en edificios independientes, lo que propicia una imagen mas fragmentada y reduce la escala del edificio en relación con el entorno. En el interior se busca una imagen industrial, con soleras de hormigón pulido, muros de fábrica pintados e instalaciones vistas. La decoración con madera es el contrapunto cálido y el eco del diálogo establecido en tre las cubiertas y el paisaje exterior. Esto ha permitido la ejecución de la obra civil, urbanización e instalaciones con un presupuesto muy ajustado, de 1.000.000 €, impuestos no incluídos.
