MENHIR
After the the alliance sports club Skeid financed their new all year football fields for their grassroot section through a fundraiser, the club wanted to honor the contributors with a monument. As a club with a proud history, winning 8 Norwegian Cups in the 1940's through 1970's, the board of directors wanted a steadfast monument, a menhir, or “bautastein”. The architects wanted to make the solid menhir playful, organic and modern.
The menhir’s shape was given by excavating big Styrofoam blocks as formwork for a concrete structure. Bent steel details were added for architectural qualities, and to make the heavy monument more sympathetic and inviting. An extending engraved name plate forms a bench on one side, while the narrow steps leading up to a brightly colored megaphone, made to cheer the favorite team, have become the children’s favorite hang out.
