Sea Park. The reconversion of obsolete industrial areas
Continuous growth and development in the twentieth century has generated a neverending cycle of urban waste architecture, which frequently become obsolete and abandoned. In another time, these now declining structures and constructions were once key for the industrial development and growth. This is the description of the old SILOS IN THE HARBOUR OF VALENCIA, which are huge landmarks that have recently been erased from the urban landscape.
Our work commences with raising social awareness and providing information about the past use and value of the buildings, as well as proposing its new uses through architectural design. It aims to re-inhabit these structures in order to preserve and re-use them to cater for the needs and demands of the XXI century. Our work will activate and "recycle" the buildings, which will involve the regeneration of the surrounding urban network that has been repeatedly damaged and polluted through industrial use.
Using socio-cultural activities and the temporary occupation of these buildings, we will be implementing a form of LOCAL DEVELOPMENT PROCEDURE that will convert the structures to become more global and interconnected; thus transcending the perception of a buildingthrough the creation of physical and virtual networks (educational web apps and free open access exchange platforms).
Different actors, architects, technicians, engineers, heritage experts, art-historians, artists, cultural entertainers, social educators, global and local governments and former employees will all be involved... creating a network and platform (proyectosilos.com) to reactivate the prospective buildings, which are undervalued resources that can be utilized to create new opportunities and services within their surrounding environment.
