The Koszalin Cathedral is the most precious monument in the town. Lack of a sacristy with a suitable space should not be, in the authors opinion, a pretext to add to this integral and finite form any other elements than sacral ones. A decision concerning building stairs in the existing sacristy to the new underground part allows one to avoid these elements, which are inconvenient from the point of view of conservation and preservation of monuments.
The conception of a passage from a sacristy being semi-dark and ascetic in its form, to the altar on the stairs running through a tunnel is symbolically justified: per aspera ad astra, ad augusta per angusta from the bottom to the top. The climate and atmosphere acts out the priests way from the sacristy to the Lords Table, and constitutes a setting for the moment of preparation to the meeting of sacrum.
The underground structure was divided into three main zones: the first one is a corridor which is an extension of the stairs, together with the adjacent wardrobe and the toilet; the second one is the space for awaiting and meetings with the faithful (this is where also the vault was installed, where monstrances and valuable liturgical vessels are kept behind armour glass); the third one is the proper sacristy. Along the internal walls of the sacristy, between the "supports", are located niches filled with wardrobes holding accessories connected with the liturgy (e.g. corporals, albs, surplices, stoles, etc.). There are five of these in the proper sacristy, just as many there are colours of liturgical vestments (white, red, green, violet and golden).
In a deep niche, higher than the other ones, lit with the daylight from the top, there is a figure of Gods Mother, the patron saint of the parish. This little chapel is the place of prayers and concentration for the priests before the Holy Mass.
The sacristy existing so far holds only handy liturgical accessories. This is where the priests meet the altar boys. The priest's rooms are located on the aisle attic.
Concrete, wood, stone and frosted glass are the only materials used for the construction of this structure (also for the interior decoration). Monolithic walls and a concrete ceiling with the structure of joints in compliance with the constructional module, the tile floor and stairs, the doors, the furniture, the cross, the figure from massive wood, luxfer tiles in the sealing as daily lighting and fittings from milk glass in the same format as artificial lighting: all of this makes up a calm, plain and reflective nature of the interior of the new sacristy.
