AOR Architects
Our practice aims to combine practical, economic, social, aesthetic and ecological demands into memorable architecture that is in harmony with its context.
Based in Helsinki, we are experienced in designing complex public buildings in demanding urban settings, as well as additions in delicate historical contexts and natural surroundings. We have particular expertise in designing future learning environments for the world-renowned Finnish national curriculum. Our work includes a research project on learning environments for the city of Helsinki as well as the design of a new open-plan school for 800 pupils in Helsinki.
In addition to building design, our portfolio includes urban design and planning, with projects ranging from small urban interventions to large city plans. As members of the Uusi Kaupunki Design Collective, we promote participatory design methods that aim to make cities better by working together with residents. The work of Uusi Kaupunki was awarded the 2016 Pietilä Prize for special achievement in reforming architecture.
Our practice has received numerous awards and prizes in international competitions and in Finland, including winning designs for Tampere Art Museum, Tuusula High School and Community Centre, Jätkäsaari school in Helsinki and Viewpoint pavilion in London. Our design for a new visitor centre at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Petäjävesi Old Church has been awarded the Finnish Association of Architects’ Wuorio prize as well as a Commendation in the Silver Medal Category of RIBA President’s Medals 2016
We design with the latest BIM software and have developed a skill for high-quality visualizations. At the same time, we value traditional craftsmanship and are committed to using sustainable solutions and natural materials as the foundation of all our work. We share our knowledge on building and architecture through frequent public lectures and through our teaching at Aalto University. We are a member of ATL Association of Finnish architectural offices.
We are always interested in new collaborations.
