Spuimarkt – Best Shopping Centre 2009
This year’s prize for the best Shopping Centre in The Netherlands was awarded last week to
the Spuimarkt in The Hague designed by Bolles+Wilson. The prize, which is now in its
twentieth year, was presented by the Nederlandse Raad van Winkelcentra (NRW) to the
developers Spuimarkt cv (ING Real Estate, Multi Vastgoed, BAM Vastgoed).
The winning project impressed the jury with its innovative character and its professional,
daring and adventurous spirit. “As one of the first successful combinations of retail and
leisure in The Netherlands, the Spuimarkt is a multifunctional development of international
standard”, announced the NRW jury.
They also considered outstanding its integration with
the surrounding urban fabric, its combination of architecture and design employing an
optimal use of space, and the careful integration of the existing Jewish monument.
Altogether, the jury regarded the Spuimarkt as a successful centre and catalyst for the
neighbourhood and as a fitting part to the urban quarter (Spuiquartier) through which the
centre of The Hague is gaining international renown
