REWE Green Farming, Berlin by Acme
Following the success of the Wiesbaden prototype, the Berlin market is the second realisation of the 'REWE Green Farming' concept and demonstrates the modularity and adaptability of ACME's design.
Over the past century, society has become increasingly disconnected from the natural world — from the rhythm of growing seasons to the origins of our food. As traditional markets evolved into supermarkets, convenience gradually replaced seasonality and locality. Creating a more sustainable food system requires food stores to once again function as true marketplaces, celebrating locally grown, seasonal produce and reconnecting people with the process of food production.
REWE is an adaptable and sustainable market concept designed to suit a wide range of sites. Conceived as a contemporary timber market hall, the building showcases locally farmed and prepared products through its architecture.
An integrated aquaponic system and modular greenhouse form the heart of the building, while large glass facades connect the interior to the surrounding landscape and flood the space with natural light, emphasising transparency in the food-making process.
The timber structure, defined by arching columns, creates a more human-scale shopping experience and establishes a new architectural identity for REWE.
The modular timber used in the supermarket's construction, comprises 72 columns with capitals made of stacked timber forming the supporting structure and creating a vaulted structure inside. This highly visible modular timber structure forms the main element of a new architectural identity for REWE.
The timber elements have standard dimensions so they can be dismantled and reused without needing to be recycled.
