Butler Gallery Garden Studio
New Contemporary Art Space within an Existing Historic Structure
The Garden Studio is a unique project set within the triangular walls of a disused 18th-century latrine on the grounds of the Butler Gallery, a contemporary art gallery in Kilkenny, Ireland.
Its primary use is as an overflow workshop area for the busy gallery. It will also act as a collaborative community space and offer the gallery the opportunity to host artists in residence.
A light timber-framed structure was placed within the historic walls to create a “building within a building”, minimising the impact on the Protected Structure.
The new structure is topped with a polycarbonate-clad lantern, which rises above the existing walls to announce itself as a contemporary intervention and act as a beacon for the gallery.
