Soul Residences, Midtown at Mac Park
Located northwest of Sydney’s central business district, the recently completed Soul Residences has been designed to contribute to the precinct’s broader vision of a walkable, socially connected urban village embedded within parkland.
The project seeks to create something humane: a place with warmth, where light, shade, shadow, and form come together to offer something memorable and unexpected at the entry point of the precinct.
Soul Residences comprises a private 103-apartment building and four terrace homes, alongside a 130-apartment affordable housing building and two community housing buildings with 259 homes. The homes and buildings are of equal quality, creating a true tenure-blind outcome. The precinct establishes the community’s core design ethos, celebrating natural colours. The buildings are indistinguishable in terms of architectural merit, construction quality, and interiors.
At the centre of the project, the site is reached through a circular gate at the street. The building forms resemble leaves reaching out for sunlight, and the entire project can be understood as a garden in this sense: reaching towards the sun and creating beautiful rooms that face the sun, the streets, and the central garden.
In this way, the project evokes a community with the opportunity to look both inward and outward; to reflect and to develop a sense of prospect and optimism for the future of its inhabitants. Residents will always be able to seek a horizon from the safety of their home.
The podium areas feature carefully integrated landscaping, softening the building edges and aligning the project with the broader community’s greenery.
