FINKWILLER SCHOOL GROUP
The extension project of Finkwiller School takes place at the heart of a heterogeneous urban environment, remarkable for its strong cultural and architectural identity. The school, whose construction dates back to the 1960s, is set in close proximity to important historical elements, such as the historic stone wall circling the playground, the nearby famous Ponts Couverts and the river Ill. On a broader scale, the school blends into an urban context distinct for its timber framed houses, residential buildings, and the built area forming the civil hospital. Among the existing urban landscape, the school stands out for its privileged position, accessible through two streets, facing the Henri Durant square. Its existing architecture is therefore put forward: simple and functional, as the needs of its time demanded.
The building is formed by two distinct entities, organized around the playground. The first is dedicated to the elementary school, its three floors forming the street side façade. The second entity houses the preschool, organized on the ground floor to the northern limit of the site. The project, which primarily includes the construction of a cafeteria, acts as a link between the preschool and primary school. It aims to harmonise the relationship between the two buildings, and blend the whole school into the historical urban environment.
