Remembering Antonio Monestiroli.
I still clearly remember the first day of university at the Composition I course held by Antonio Monestiroli.
We students were ready to draw anything. Instead he presented himself with an annotated bibliography, which ordered the basic texts of architecture into fundamental themes; we could only draw from the following year, first we needed to know what to draw.
That year I discovered the Type, the Place, the Treatises, the Manuals, a whole world opened up: the elegance of Adolf Loos, the sagacity of Karl Kraus, the ethical minimalism of Heinrich Tessenow, the rigor of Giorgio Grassi…
An incredible series of lenses revealed to us the world of architecture and the underlying thought. The scaffolding that supported the infinite beautiful architectural forms that we admired.
A few years later, now a graduate, I saw this architecture published, where the words of Antonio Monestiroli, which that year had opened up a world to me, now condensed into something I could see. Where Place, Type, Form and Function intertwined in a masterful work and where his thoughts resounded.
Today, as a photographer, I wanted to see this place again. I lingered until after closing time, in that suspended time that awaits the arrival of evening, trying to listen. And by listening those circuits of memory and emotion were reactivated to pay homage to that first day of school.

Ricordo ancora con chiarezza il primo giorno di università al corso di Composizione I tenuto da Antonio Monestiroli.
Noi studenti pronti a disegnare qualsiasi cosa. Lui si presenta, invece, con una bibliografia ragionata che ordinava i testi basilari dell’architettura in temi fondamentali; avremmo potuto disegnare solo dall’anno successivo, prima bisognava conoscere e sapere cosa disegnare.
Quell’anno scoprii il tipo, il luogo, la trattatistica, la manualistica, si aprii tutto un mondo: l’eleganza di Adolf Loos, la sagacia di Karl Kraus, il minimalismo etico di Heinrich Tessenow, il rigore di Giorgio Grassi…
Un’incredibile serie di lenti ci svelavano il mondo dell’architettura ed il pensiero soggiacente. L’impalcatura che sorreggeva le infinite bellissime forme che ammiravamo.
Qualche anno dopo, ormai laureato, vidi pubblicato questo cimitero, dove le parole di Antonio Monestiroli, che quell’anno mi avevano aperto un mondo, ora si condensavano in qualcosa che potevo vedere. Dove il luogo, il tipo, la forma e la funzione si intrecciavano in un’opera magistrale e dove risuonavano i suoi pensieri.
Oggi, come fotografo, ho voluto rivedere questo luogo. Mi sono soffermato fin dopo l’orario di chiusura, in quel tempo sospeso che attende l’arrivo della sera, cercando di ascoltare. E ascoltando riattivare quei circuiti della memoria e dell’emozione per rendere omaggio a quel primo giorno di scuola.
