The museum is a combination of several buildings: a 19th century slaughterhouse, a former banquet hall, a 1970’s wing and an adjacent private house.
It is the new circulation zone that holds the four different buildings together and melts them into a single museum. In this zone we can find the entrance hall, the ticket desk, the bookshop and a new grand café. Due to the careful positioning of the new entrance building the temporary and permanent exhibition rooms can be flexibly compartmentalized.
The existing front garden of the museum is turned into a proper city area. In the former private house can now be found the educational spaces, the multi-purpose hall and the offices. The house’s back garden becomes an intimate statue garden and will be part of the new exhibition route.
