The house is situated at a small square with a fountain in the oldest and listed part of the village Balzers. The demolished predecessor building from the middle of the 20th century no longer met the requirements of the building owner due to the internal organization and the building physics deficits. Due to its unclear location on the plot, the building made only a small contribution to the spatial definition of the site.
The replacement building corrects this shortage, moves closer to the square and closes it off towards the north. At the same time this setting creates a spatial extension of the external space over the own property away, although a pergola marks out the private garden to the neighbour property. Due to the orientation of the house transversely to the slope, a standing gable facade is formed, which accentuates the covered main entrance at the square.
The traditional solidity of the "Balzner" type of house, built of stone and plastered with lime, is dealt within a contradictory way. The white cubic volumetry dissolves into individual surfaces or layers on closer observation at the edges. Different opening sizes, which are characteristic of the program of a single-family house, are embedded in an implied structure. This is complemented by minimal sculptural interventions into the outer surface.
