The proposal is a reinterpretation of the traditional lighthouse typology, whereby, historically, luminance takes precedence over the built form.
Consisting of fine structural elements, the design seeks to harmoniously coexist with the surrounding landscape. The theory behind the design takes cues from the low budget. Therefore lateral, critical thinking must be adopted to achieve an exceptional and unusual design. The emphasis of the lighthouse lies on the luminance and variety of its compositions.
The project is composed of a tensile structure with an illuminated mesh veil, becoming an illuminated focal point along the Geroskipou Beach coastline.
The lighting can change depending on time. It is possible to illuminate bars, cables and mesh both separately or simultaneously to generate different atmospheres.
While the lighthouse remains humble and seemingly disappears during the daytime, it becomes a luminous volume as the sun begins to disappear, contrasting with the night sky.
The proposed system is based on the principles of tensegrity, discontinuous compression and continuous tension. The module consists of a pillar and a stainless steel triangle. According to the structural pre-calculation, the sections vary from phi-139.8x6.6 to phi-60.5x18 to decrease the total weight. The steel tensioners vary between phi-18 to phi-12 supporting winds and loads between 16.3 ton and 7.24 ton.
