RATIONAL PROPORTIONS. THOM BROWNE STORE IN MILAN
The first European Thom Browne flagship store opened at number 10 in Via del Gesù in the heart of Milan.
The "milanese" project involved the refitting of an historic single-storey building, laid out across five rooms covering a total of 120 sqm.
The mood was inspired by the strict proportions of Italian between-the-wars rationalist architecture, but it also comprises elements of ’50s America office spaces, reinterpreting and combining aesthetic codes of the old and the new continents.
The materials and decor are a kind of mini-catalogue of sober elegance, with poured terrazzo flooring, grey Bardiglio marble walls, steel Venetian blinds on the windows, and a selection of continental furniture from the turn of the century.
Thom browne’s stores were set on the theme of "proportions".
"Architecture, from Vitruvius up to now, the good architecture, deals first of all with proportions, perfect proportions. Each store has been "redesigned" following the human proportions and the "size" of the spaces have changed" (Flavio Albanese)
