STATE PROPERTY AGENCY, Ancona Headquarter
The building, which was born as a residential building in the 1960s, represents a classic example of reuse and functional transformation.
During the 1980s it had been used as an office, and in 2001 the State Proprety launched a competition to become its headquarters.
The project, a winning achievement, has deliberately denied functional stratifications by attempting to make clear the new role of institutional representation. The very limited budget provided by the client would have allowed only a good internal restructuring as well as the necessary structural seismic adjustment. But the opportunity to make a more radical transformation of the building was tempting and the experience gained over time through restructuring has pushed the project forward. In fact, while maintaining and strengthening the structure, a real surgical construction operation was carried out. Resolved from the residential ornaments, the building was sought to intervene on the form by digging and covering entire portions of the facade.
The openings, seemingly randomly placed, sometimes slid as narrow cracks in front of the structure, covering it with burnished aluminum sheets, and sometimes open wide shaded squares, always different, always unexpected. The entire building is simply covered with red plaster, a historic element that has always been present in our tradition of construction. If the building is noticed by shape and color, the interior spaces highlight the will to get a sober, warm and relaxing environment.
The double height atrium is the reference space and distribution of the entire building. Clear stone, warm white, glass and zenital light make it a cozy and elegant place.
