Jean Rostand middle school renovation and expansion.
The middle school Jean Rostand in Muzillac was built in the 1970s to keep up with the increasing student demand in this city between the sea coast and the countryside.
The school had a lack of space so, the competition program was to extend the existent complex by building new classrooms.
Our project offers a different solution by demolishing the old expansion to free a bigger schoolyard. In this way, the project connects the existent building with the new one by creating more functional circulations and a formal unity.
This architectural approach established a new synergy between the old and the new, providing a clearer and more global image.
For the building envelope a perforated metal cladding has been chosen with a specific care to cover up differences between constructions. Windows of the new classrooms re-use proportions and rhythm of old ones.
Electrical “butterfly” shutters are placed at the same level of claddings and instore a filter between interior and exterior.
It is perfectly integrated to claddings and unidentifiable while it is closed. In the open position, it works as a solar shading system.
