RECYCLING HOUSING
For contemporary architects, there is a newfound sensitivity towards the already built. Obsolete and dilapidated constructions are the new building materials an source of latent energy awaiting to be redefined.
Located in Cumbayá, rural church situated East from Quito’s Metropolitan District, a transformation project inside an existing construction is intervened.
Thinking in universal updating techniques over a specific scenario, leads us to situate in generic spaces. These spaces can be occupied with different programs as time goes by.
The client’s intention is to transform a disused space as the old living room into a habitable space of 80m2. The idea of recycling was focussed in keeping the existing structure in its natural condition so that the structure allowed us to create different spaces.
The project is developed under two concepts: the first one, refers to space-based solutions that will help in the structural integration, employing a system of objects as furniture, substituting the masonry wall as a system of separation, with the purpose of making a profitable use of the interior space between axes. The second idea focuses on the edges through a double facade, the first one is a glass screen from the interior, working as a light-gathering surface; the second one from the exterior employing a metal grid that opens and closes simultaneously.
Furthermore, a concrete hall, a plus space that works as integration to the garden.
There are no hierarchy in this construction, just simply transfers towards a new way of inhabiting.
