MANIFESTO
Incompiuto is the most important Italian Architectural Style since WWII.
1_The Incompiuto is the interpretive paradigm of public architecture in Italy from the postwar period until today.
It seems unbelievable that the number of unfinished works throughout the territory might generate an independent ideological program from the will of its designers. The size of the phenomenon, the territorial extension, and the incredible architectural particularities make Incompiuto the most important Italian architectural style of the past 40 years.
2_The Incompiuto is based on an ethics and an aesthetics of its own.
In more than four decades of existence, the Incompiuto has been proposed as a phenomenon to be observed in depth. More than forty years that have had a deep impact on the soil and flesh of our country. They have molded the environment and the community. An aesthetics and an ethics with which it is necessary to come to grips all the way. Ethics and aesthetics: the pillars on which every style rests. Incompiuto has style.
3_Unfinished works are contemporary ruins. Born as such, monuments generated by the creative enthusiasm of liberalism.
During the years when enthusiasm and growth gave Italians unexpected prosperity, creativity and exuberance became the propulsion engines of a reconfiguration of the Italian landscape. In a society in which history seems to have accelerated, unfinished public works are the ruins of a compressed time.
4_The Incompiuto redefines the landscape in an incisive and radical way. The process of creating unfinished public works celebrates the conquest of the territory on the part of modern man.
A brazen, determined, and vital conquest. Behind the Incompiuto, there doesn’t hide a rational and detached attitude, but the exact opposite. Only a visceral and passionate relationship with the land is able to bring life to such a varied and magnetic phenomenon. Strong territorial signs, unfinished public works stretch from Sicily, where the style is typical, across the peninsula. A journey of discovery of the beauty of an unfinished Italy.
5_The Incompiuto has as its postulate the partial execution of the project.
Error is the fruitful act in which the unfinished meets the time of the project. The unfinished thereby activates a process for a new project: open, with unpredictable outcomes, full of untapped potential. The project aspires and dreams of becoming incomplete.
6_The Incompiuto has concrete as its constituent material. The colors and surfaces are determined by the degradation of the materials due to the effects of time and forces of nature.
Cement is matter at its purest, the backbone of the modern symbol of labor and productivity. It is capable of absorbing the signs of the time and enriching itself with colors and shades. A strong and significant choice that makes these sites unique in their kind. Cement, iron, wood, along with fig trees, weeds, cacti, and lichens are seemingly distant elements that become proper stylistic traits.
7_Nature, by means of the spontaneous vegetation, synaesthetically dialogues with unfinished works, reappropriating the sites.
Unfinished works elude the gaze like black holes in the landscape. They are mesmerized. In spaces where the human has been ousted, plant colonization, the only vital presence, reclaims surfaces, redefining forms. In these ruins, nature abolishes not only history, but time.
8_In the Incompiuto, the tension between function and form is resolved. Here, the defect becomes a work of art.
Sport as mental rather than physical effort. The product of a vivid imagination and a contemplative approach. An attitude, a style, that results in public works of architecture deprived of declared functions but open to the imagination of those who live there. A swimming pool that was never a swimming pool, a stadium that only has the shape of a stadium, become tragic sites of art and representation.
9_The Incompiuto reassembles and collects sites of contemplation, of thought, and of imagination.
The first preamble for contemplation is the observation point for the composition. The composition of the place that will consist of seeing with the vision of the imagination the physical site where the thing we want to contemplate is located. Unfinished works are spaces for contemplation capable of influencing our senses. Places from which it is possible to testify to the existence of Italy as an aesthetic phenomenon. Contemplating the world from these ruins is not the same as taking a journey through history, but of having an experience of time.
10_The Incompiuto is a symbol of political power and artistic sensibility. Not only works of architectural genius but nerve endings of a complex and articulated social organism.
Unfinished works originate from the union between exuberant Italian creativity and ancient ancestral and political oratorical skills of these people. This culture and style, is today a science and an economy that finds its apotheosis in the contract, supporting its natural creative drive with generous public funding.
