Apartment Building Conversion
The radical conversion-project of the apartment building reacts to the initial circumstances of the property, it changes essentially the configuration of the floor plan and adjusts the outer volume by distinguishing and reinforcing its inherent qualities.
The relatively new apartment building, built 1985 in a prime location of Oberwil suffered of bad apartment layout, small room sizes an dark spaces. To improve significantly the attractivity of the real estate, the client organized an architectural competition for its conversion concept.
The project proposes a radical change of the apartment layouts, maximization of the legal land use by small volume extensions, that at the same time provide the rooms with new, big-scale window openings. In the ground floor 3 new apartments are created out of the former storage spaces.
The new apartment layout concentrates around the repositioned living room, now light-full and generously open to the surrounding. The new added structural elements remain visible as fair-face concrete columns and beams.
The volume of the building changes by introducing the new openings and new, bigger balconies in prefabricated concrete elements.
