Bertran II
A series of dark squared terrazzo pieces, organized in a systematic disarray, stand out on the smooth white concrete platform placed at the end of this urban garden in Barcelona. The platform is elevated 35 cm from the level of the garden in order to cover the top of a retaining wall built some time ago to avoid a landslide that could affect the foundation and stability of the building.
The abstract constellation of 20 x 20 cm pieces softens the massive volume of the platform and confers a more human scale on it. Different possibilities of density and disorder were studied so as to create a set of rules of placement that would follow a dynamic open system, rather than a fixed and static composition to be precisely implemented on site.
A long bench presents a visual background to the garden from the inside of the house and creates an habitable space in the sunniest spot of the garden, which also visually connects with the tennis courts 10 meters below the garden.
