Concrete Block House
Weekend house for friends to get together. The design is based on the relationships among different materials and their individual characteristics in relation to the spatial articulation within the small volume.
Situated in a quiet resort area outside of Tokyo, this house was designed for a young couple and their family and friends, to spend weekends away from a busy urban life.
The requirements were to provide various possibilities of accommodation for different combinations of people. The ground level is used for common living, and the four bedrooms on the upper levels provide the flexibility for the different accommodation.
The structure is a combination of concrete block, cast concrete, and the wood for the roof, which corresponds to the differently characterized spatial condition of various places of the entire house. These three structural/material elements are also given the independent geometric manipulation, which, as a whole, create the coherent relationship to one another.
