LIGHTHOUSE SQUARE
We chose to develop a program orientated toward arts and artists in residence for the lighthouse hotel. At first, we were seeking to recreate the ambiance of typical italian villages. To do so, we looked especially at the organization of those villages with the church at its center and with its piazza where all the people meet. We looked at Camillo Sitte analysis of italian famous church and their spatial organisation regarding the piazza.
We consider the lighthouse as a church and as the central system of the project. Our first move was to design a close figure around the lighthouse to create a central place for the project where people can gather. Our second step was to design and organize the public square with all the very public programs - such as exhibition spaces, cafeteria, restaurant and a conference space - on its outskirt.
This dense regroupment of activities stimulates the creative life around the piazza. The third move was to extend the system ; each figure is completed with accomodations for artists in residences and atelier and the end of the linear system. Each cell has a view on the Mediterranean sea and is exposed to a different light.
A centripetal system gathers the public program and life around a plaza and a centrifugal system with a clear view on the surrondings which regroup housing and workshops.
