IN THE FLOW DYNAMIC by Francis Rambert in GeneroCity Generous vs. generic
Open up, connect, de-compartmentalization, de-dramatize by playing on compactness. The goal is to redesign a Large, 60-year-old complex. Once the decision was made to demolish the four towers and keep the strip buildings, it was possible to design a new Landscape making use of the tramway terminus.
Five hectares for a new metropolitan urban setting creating an interface between the town of Begles and the city of Bordeaux.
What was strip buildings yesterday have now been transformed into a connection. Porosity and fluidity, “like coral reefs,” are the theme in this strategy. Unable here to respond in height, the project affirms the density aspect of a “monolith.”
The instrument of renewal is a large square formed by four buildings in the idea of a piece of city by sequences “where we discover things by transitions.” This architectural design in the scale of an urban project cultivates a certain ambiguity: is this “a square with buildings” or “buildings with a square,” with such closely linked elements?
Different in form but of the same nature, the four buildings are all equipped with a heavy wall, a double skin designed to reduce noise and optimize comfort. The complex’s compactness is supported by “veritable inclusions of vegetated densities.”
