KHORA, PROPOSAL FOR A SUMMER PAVILION
International Competition, Pedro Duarte Bento
In a Greek-English Lexicon, «khora» represents “the space lying between two places or limits.” In the same entry, «khora» is “to have space or room for receiving or holding something” — in a space or even within the mind. In philosophical terms, «khora» is both a void, the beggining of everything (Plato) and a non-receptacle, a space of de-construction (Derrida). «Khora» is also perceived as a womb, a nucleus, a core. This latter definition is particularly interesting for this proposal — building a pavilion that will operate as the central refugium in the main lawn. Its womb, nucleus, core — in a form of a garden.
