Located among the historic hutong district of Beijing, the project calls for a conversion of an old ammunition factory complex into a modern dance center with a performance hall, a practice hall and a salon.
The project explores the very nature of “stage”by setting up a series of linked spaces; each potential the ground for performance. The red diamond façade is a mediating skin, between a 400 seat theater within, and the open courtyard outside. The salon is situated across from the red diamond theater, a floating white box, much like the relationship between the classic Chinese stage and audience seating.
During events, performers have been known to explore and utilize every space around the red diamond theater as performing stages: the theater within, the stage-set like entrance, the cat walk space between the existing building and the new façade, the courtyard, the floating white-box salon, etc.
The relationship between seeing and being seen are constantly reversed and blurred.
