SCENOGRAPHY FOR CONTEMORARY DANCE / ZONE - academic
ZONE was a collaboration between the Japanese National Theatre and Noism in the spring of 2009. The concept of a ‘ZONE of professions’ was established by artistic director Jo Kanamori and was presented in three pieces called ‘academic / nomadic / physic’.
‘Academic’ was understood as ‘lines, compression, composition’ and expressed the continuity of the 400 year history of ballet, accompanied by ‘Partitas for solo violin’ by J.S.Bach. This piece of so-called ‘classical dance’ was imbued with a sense of quality and timelessness, a feeling that it has existed before now and will continue into the future. 250 years ago, there was no electric lighting in theatres and performers had to work by the light of torch flames. The space was animated only by these ‘flames of lights’ and darkness between them which expressed a depth of timeless space.
