Nan Xi Studio Expansion
This is an expansion project locates in courtyard of "Nanxi Studio". There are several crabapple trees in the yards which are planted on the completion of the studio. Up to now, there have been six or seven years. At beginning of design, we decided to make the crabapple trees as the center of the coming new buildings and new life.
The crabapple tree stands at the entrance of the building receives the sight through the floor to ceiling glass from the foyer and dining room. Stepping to the living room on the second floor, the crabapple tree can be seen through the windows as well. To make enough space for the tree’s growing, there are setbacks both on first floor and second floor, which ensure sunshine and space. Continue to the studio on the third floor, it is a complete rectangular space with skylight. Standing below the skylight and looking down, the crown of the tree shows in the window, which is the most impressive view..
Depending on seasons and light changes, looking at the crabapple tree from different directions creates a dialogue between architectural language and the artist's life.
