It is mostly open-plan renovation of the apartment that doubles as an incubator for Taiwanese businessmen and morphs to meet their needs.
'Amphidromous Rectangle' renovation with 10.5 meters depth and 5.4 meters width, has a functional opening only to the west.
The site is situated near Osaka City’s transportation nucleus, so the client hoped for a design that would not only provide a peaceful but interesting haven for themselves, but that could also accommodate at least one guest eager for a well-equipped work space.
Firstly, based on the clear plan composition having the element of excursion and flexibility, I decided and refined to remove and retain the existing parts.
It is achieved this by creating a rectangular “donut” that establishes continuity between living and working areas. These consist of a semi-open kitchen that spills out into a living/dining area, a traditional tatami room and a hallway, a guest space and a central room with a walk-in closet.
The northern wall which extends to the west from the east materialized with a blurred reflection. It works as the screen which makes various light ans scenes appear vaguely.
Reflected virtual illuminance amplifies the sense of fluidity and abstractness in the space producing a space with an expressive fragmentary feel.
I installed lights of many kinds and shapes that create a variety of “moods.” The linear lighting on the wall makes a space feel deep and continuous. In so doing, just by switching out the light, the client can re-arrange the house depending on what is happening - a business meeting, projection conference, and an art exhibition.
Privacy is achieved with sliding doors while flexibility is optimized with various lighting design.
In addition to cutting slits into the doors that allow natural light from the western openings to reach across 10 meters of depth in order to illuminate all corners of the home during the day.
The wavering light and shadow makes residents feel the changing of time and scene the existence of others.
By a minimum intervention, I proposed a multi-use space which can be adapted for various unexpected demands and scenes.
