Extension of the multifunctional double sports halls in the Eichi Centre Niederglatt
The Eichi centre was built in 1985 by the architect Walter Schindler. From the outside the multifunctional hall appears as a complete structure. In addition to the sport facilities one finds a two-storey foyer, a changing room and shower, a spectators’ gallery, technical rooms and a stage. The room can be subdivided for different performances.
The concrete building, with it’s façade of yellow fibreglass and orange from the school building, combines together in the warm ensemble of Aleppo pine ochre and the orange colour of the school building. Internally the exposed concrete interacts with Aleppo pine and coloured polyurethane coating. The change rooms are designed in yellow and blue – the colours of the local coat of arms.
A notion of an eye-catching bouncing ball determines the design of the hall and the circular form is warranted. Circular gaps through the wall are taken up in a new form to give an insight into the hall, so that the opposite wall is absorbed, allowing a view of out-doors. Cultural and sportive use of the hall is represented by the circular motives that are found milled into the walls and the ceiling.
