Zahl und Bewegung
Positioned at the edge of the historic centre of Weimar and in the immediate vicinity of the former Gauforum, the convention centre and the Weimarhallen Park, the site holds an opportunity to reorganize and improve the public space in this area. Therefore one of the aims of the design is to extend the park towards the north and to create generous openings to Karls-Liebknecht Street and towards the residential area in the north side . The Museum itself is positioned as a solitaire in the expansion of the park and is aligned along the inclination which separates the old from the new part of the park. The base of the museum mediates between the higher and the lower level of the Weimarhallenpark. From the base, three volumes rise up, creating an ensemble of volumes on the higher part. Together with the base each volume is positioned and organized according to its programmatic role. The southern block hosts the entrance, foyer and a cafe. It connects to the base level from where the 'Schaulager' and the rest of the exhibition space are accessible. The northern block solely contains 2 more floors with exhibition space. Two staircases along the facade enable a flexible routing throughout the different spaces and allow views back into the park and the city in its background. The cluster is completed by a last volume intervention in the west. It contains the facilities for technical supply, storage as well as office space for the administration on the upper level. These three volumes create a central spot at the heart of the new park extension where visitors of the park will mingle with visitors of the museum.
