The house sits on a corner at the end of a row of regular rectangular lots. Built in a residential area in a suburb of Barcelona, its volumetry and character contrast with the traditional houses of the neighbourhood.
In respect with its context and its diverse parameters, we approached this project as one volume, treated as a whole. A plastic body composed of one skin that defines the shape and creates the space. By following and processing the information given by the site -i.e. its orientation, topography, surroundings- the volume is modified, manipulated, cut away. The space benefits then of light, views and openness. The white plaster exterior skin is marked where incisions have been made and surfaces folded, showing the distinct color and texture of orange bricks on the inside . Natural stones on the ground reflect the interior that extends itself outside. The general philiosophy of the construction is also reflected in the attention put into the design and execution of the many details troughout the house.
The house is divided into two floors. At ground level are the day rooms and the main bedroom; upstairs is an open spaced studio and the secondary bedroom. Diagonal walls at the entrance focus towards the kitchen, the dining room and the living room, which are aligned with the straight wall. This succession of rooms leads gradually to a double space framed by the skin of the house [as if it had detached itself from it] but still enlightened by the now enlarged opening of the skylight above. The patio is then part of the house as well as part of the garden, as it opens up to it. Opposite these day spaces, the suite area shapes a much more irregular façade that contrasts again with the smoothness of the curved wall above. The studio on the second floor is a calm space, punctuated by its two main sources of light: the stairway and, at the other end, the patio below.
