The project of witry & witry, winning project of an international competition, will enlarge the area of the Luxembourg University, the „Cité des Sciences“, with two new buildings. The „Maison du Nombre“ comprises the data center of the university with a refrigerating plant as well as the academic institutes of the sciences mathematics and informatics. The „Maison des Arts et des Etudiants“ contains several art studios, meeting rooms for students and a large multipurpose room and serves as meeting point for cultural and artistic events and for official presentations of the university.
A special challenge for the architects was the integration of the project in the existing urban structure, which is dominated by three buildings: the „Maison du Savoir“, the Dexia building and the old furnaces of the city. Another request was the possibility to realize the „Maison du Nombre“ and the „Maison des Arts et des Etudiants“ in different phases of construction and to consider an eventual future enlargement of the building.
The jury commended particularly the urban solution of the projects with the apparent entries and the reflection of the building functions in the architecture. The clarity and precision of the mathematic sciences are expressed in the clearly structured, L-shaped „Maison du Nombre“. This compact buildung is faced by the sculptural and transparent „Maison des Arts et des Etudiants“, a wooden cube enveloped in a lucent membrane.
