Our project is born from the main intent to create the library as a place of aggregation, as a "place of knowledge".
The concept is to unite the identity of the square, a public place bordered by buildings and connected by roads, to the courtyard, a private space typical of Milan buildings, giving rise to what we call an open courtyard.
The Library named B.a.Co. - Biblioteca al Cortile - it becomes a square itself.
The Library is inside the park of via Odazio.
The central North-South route runs through the park and the Library, creating a connection between the parties.
This is joined by a series of other side paths, which provide widespread access to the park, also linking the various public functions present.
The exterior is a place to stay, to be devoted to reading, where the spaces paved with natural and permeable material, represent small squares, each with a specific function: a playground, a open-theater, an atelier in the trees in direct contact with the green house and finally a water garden, a square where you can understand and study the use of water resources, without waste.
In the east, we find a garden belonging to the library with urban gardens and open spaces in direct connection with B.a.Co.
On the west side of the Library there is a square, a direct connection with the covered market, through which it is possible to create an "unicuum" of public functions.
The squares also light up the park, because on some sides are raised from the ground, in this space are placed backlit panels, on which are reported aphorisms and stories.
The entire park is transformed into a bright and safe place for knowledge.
There is a constant connection between the library and the park.
This relationship is also strengthened by the natural element that enters B.a.Co. from the outside, with trees and small gardens, as well as in the park there are functions closely connected to those of the Library.
A very strong link between interior and exterior, a symbol of culture that has no boundaries, a universal value capable of uniting all peoples.
The building is characterized by a single enclosure that collects different functions, but linked together.
A place in which the needs of various users, adults, young people and children converge, all users of a "knowledge container".
Outside the library is developed for a height above ground of 10.00 m and resumes another of the typical characteristics of the blocks in the neighborhood: a base different from the rest of the volume.
This element has been reworked in a ground floor with transparent windows, characterized by writings and images, which transmit the contents of B.a.Co. and at the same time invite new users to "browse".
A library that evokes, even at night, a strong iconic image.
The vertical closures of the upper floors are instead made of opaque glass panels.
From the compositional point of view, an ideal axis of symmetry that enters the library from the park, allows the identification of the main entrances, located on the north-south axis.
Internal distribution is very fluid with furnishings that are arranged in such a way as to identify precise functionalities, identifying different types of reading for each age, to which spaces for adults, young people and children correspond.
The functions most traditionally linked to the idea of a library are distributed in the various floors.
The main structure is in steel beams.
In the roof there are integrated photovoltaic panels, arranged in such a way as to form the inscription B.a.Co., which is also visible from the surrounding buildings.
An iconic library.
