Dan Flavin at Santa Maria Annunciata in Chiesa Rossa

Designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Muzio in the 1930s, the building was restored in the mid-1990s when the priest Giulio Greco invited the US artist Dan Flavin to create a light installation there. Flavin’s completed the work, Untitled, in 1996, the year of his death, in a project realised by Fondazione Prada, the Dia Center for the Arts in New York and the Dan Flavin Estate. The interior of the church has since been lit by a sequence of green, blue, pink, golden and ultraviolet light installed by Flavin in the nave, transept and apse.
