PIAZZA DELLA STAZIONE - Belluno
“The old plazas produce a collective harmonious effect because they are uniformly enclosed. For just as there are furnished and unfurnished rooms, we could speak of complete and incomplete squares. The essential thing of both rooms and squares is the quality of enclosed space.”
The project reconstructs the physical limits of the square in order to define its primary shape. The lot is divided into two trapezoids, joined on the short side. The one on which the station is placed is intended as a real square while the second is used as parking area for extra-urban bus lines. On the lower side of the square there is a portal, which resumes of the station’s facade. This monumental door, aside from separating the square from the parking area, terminates the long prospective of the public space, highlighting its geometry. In order to increase the formal consistency of the square, a façade similar to that of the portal is built on the opposite side of the station, replacing the old façade of the existing building where services and cafes are placed.
The square so defined, is left uncluttered, covered by a uniform floor that ideally connects through the rectangular grid the new portal with the historic park and the station with the local bus stop. A large public space capable of accommodating many activities, festivals and collective celebrations. A pedestrian surface of approximately 5,000 sqm where the only vertical elements are two pylons, kept in their original position, and a pedestal that will host a sculpture in memory of the Foibe victims, from which the plaza took its name from.
