The project responds to the need to create a structure that makes it physically impossible to overcome bridge barriers; involves the removal of existing structures and the laying of new elements, specially conceived, along the edges of the viaduct. New barriers re-define and direct space by configuring a new perception: from the current horizontal opening to the bottom valley to a more markedly vertical spatiality.
At the request of the Construction Division, for maintenance and inspection aspects of the viaduct, the maximum height of the guard, measured to suffer from the road surface, is 2.40 meters.
The new barrier consists of vertical metal profiles (T 40 x 40 x 5 mm), 230 cm high and spaced 11 cm apart.
Material: galvanized metal profile (same as for other road protection); this material gives the new product the quality of the coherence - chromatic and material - with the existing protections.
The structure is designed to offer the best protection and minimum visual appearance; the rhythm of the vertical profiles conforms to a plan with a percentage of opacity (full of vacuum) of 36%.
The structure offers little wind resistance, allowing the circulation of air.
The screen is made up of individual modules that are fixed to the pre-existing uprights.
Each module measures 200 cm in width and 230 in height; It consists of 2 horizontal IPE 100 profiles to which 13 profiles T 40 x 40 x 5 are vertically secured.
For the installation of the new screen, the structures already present (box posts) are used; for the fastening of the single module - after disassembling the current protection grids - proceeds by sliding the C profile around the two flaps of the IPE 100 column.
The set of elements that make up the viaduct protection has a dual perception:
1) the horizontal road safety structure (mast and body) which is distinctly perceived by those traveling by car;
2) vertical pedestrian safety structure (T-profile rhythm) which is mainly perceived by those walking on the sidewalk side by side of the metal screen.
The rhythm of the structure gives the viaduct more visibility, enhancing it and contributing to creating a greater sense of security.
