HOUSE JA

The basic premise of the JA House is fundamentally the ability to inhabit, on a contemporary way, a bicentennial home with a content and a program nearly labyrinth, preserving to the utmost the qualities of its pre-existence and eliminating the noise of the occasional interventions subsequent to its construction.
A recent construction volume in the South was fully demolished remaining only the original House. In this space was erected a new volume of contemporary language, which adds new functions to the House so necessary to perform the actual standards, by adding space (program), light or new links with the existing program.
This volume has different levels that mold to the existing and creates new functional empty spaces.
A sequence of patios on the South, over the city of Ponta Delgada in unexpected ways, creates new relationships between the original house and the surrounding, culminating in a viewpoint to the sea on top of the House with an office area.
The main vertical circulation of the House was also reviewed by becoming a zenith light generator element that connects the floors and helps to classify older shaded spots into places of positive use.
In a typical program of city housing typology, it is the relationship between the new and the existing volume that differentiates the JA House and makes possible a spatial exercise with its own identity.
