Take zoning as a design guideline ; for the design of the Ugandan Youthasylum, our first idea was to use the site’s boundaries as a limit for the building design. The boundary became a wall to enclose the whole program. Then, by off-setting this limit, we create the inhabited volume and the circulation space. The second move was the identification of two global ambiance brought by this particular program. We identify two kind of spaces for the LGBT asylum.
The first space, design as a sort of cloister, is intended to welcome people who came at the center for appointments or informations ; people who are not suppose to stay. We imagine this space around a close courtyard to emphasize a feeling of safety and serenity for people in need. This space includes rooms for the staff, consulting room on the sides as well as common spaces for both of them in the central space steer at the landscape.
The second space is dedicated to host guest for short period. It is separated from the first one by a 3m high difference. Unlike the enclose first space which is suppose to welcome people in difficulty and try to keep them in a very private and safe environment, the second is open to the landscape and much more wide as to guide guests back in the society again. It is design around a playground garden to gather all the hosts together.
The plan is organized with the idea of two different space define by two particular ambiance. At the street level, the main space for consulting, appointment and information are displayed around a courtyard. The space is closed by the common spaces ; restaurant and shared spaces between staff and resident. Three meters below, twenty-four accomodation are organized around a open-space.
The level difference between the two space let the possibility to organize a common level for all the resident. This level is design as a shared space for the resident to gather and play, work together.
The roof unify the whole project by maintain a continuous level. The shape of the roof is design with a light slope to open to the inside of the project. The two courtyard are sized regarding to the program and to guide the youth to bigger spaces. The boundaries are occupied as to protect the whole complex from the exterior world, a brick wall design as a moucharabieh emphasize this feeling.
The section organize two rows ; the first one shelter all the inhabited space on the ground floor and the exterior spaces on first floor. The second one is dedicated to the circulation define by the structure. The whole project is based on a wooden structure which is repetited to shape the project. The post and beam are designed to be simply assemble. The beam is doubled to clasp the extreme post. The central beam is also doubled to lodge the partition wall and take the water down.
