HOUSE IN LAGO
Os primeiros registos de Lago aparecem no séc.XIII, no entanto, nos anos 80 desenvolvem-se estudos arqueológicos que comprovam distintos momentos de ocupação deste território, revelando um tipo particular de povoado “castrejo” proto-histórico. O topónimo desta freguesia de Amares espelha as suas principais características territoriais, um vale onde a sua natureza acidentada somada à confluência dos dois rios que a delimitam, Cávado e Homem, resultam numa área encharcada, terra frutífera que caracteriza o núcleo rural onde se insere o edifício a reabilitar.
The first records of Lago appear in the 13th century. However, archaeological excavations developed in the 80s show different settlement periods in this territory, revealing a particular type of proto-historic "Castro" settlement. The name of this parish of Amares mirrors its main territorial characteristics: a valley where its rugged nature delimited by the confluence of two rivers, Cávado and Homem, leads to a swamp - fruitful land that characterises the rural nucleus where the building to be rehabilitated is inserted.
A casa minhota com cobertura de duas águas já não se apresenta no seu estado puro, o passar dos anos, as consecutivas obras e adaptações assim como as consequências da divisão de propriedade, fizeram com que nesta parcela não fosse possível habitar. Mais uma vez a casa “camaleão” oferece a sua estrutura bruta para que no seu interior surja algo novo.
The house with a gable roof in the Minho region is no longer in its original state. Over the years, consecutive works and adaptations, as well as the consequences of property division made this plot of land uninhabitable. Once again, the "chameleon" house offers its gross structure so that inside something new arises.
Pela necessidade de responder ao organograma funcional e de atribuir a esta estrutura conforto, impõe-se a introdução de uma nova camada, uma fina e leve camada que não lhe toca para que respire, apenas cria a caixa essencial delimitadora dos novos espaços.
The need to comply with the functional organisation chart and provide this structure with comfort requires the implementation of a new thin and light layer, without being in contact with the structure so it can breathe. It only creates the necessary frame bounding the new spaces.
A intervenção traduz uma releitura do espaço interior cru, despido de ornamento, onde a grossa parede de granito, antiga fachada de contacto com a tradicional varanda outrora absorvida, assume incontornável presença na definição do espaço habitável. A sua centralidade define e impõe pontos de atravessamentos assumidos, pelo que, na cota inferior assistimos à misteriosa passagem entre o ponto de chegada e a cozinha-sala de pé-direito duplo, que anuncia o acesso à zona mais íntima da casa na cota superior. Se a cozinha é um espaço contido na sua função, a sala liberta-se e admite novas formas de apropriação, onde a escada além da responsabilidade funcional que lhe está inerente, oferece os seus degraus para que neles nos possamos sentar.
The intervention represents a reinterpretation of the raw interior space, stripped of ornament, where the thick granite wall - old façade in contact with the once absorbed traditional balcony - assumes an inevitable presence in the definition of the habitable space. Its centrality defines and enforces the assumed crossing points. On the lower storey we witness the mysterious crossing between the entrance and the double-height kitchen and living room, announcing the access to the most intimate area of the house on the upper storey. If the kitchen is a space confined to its function, the living room is free to undertake new functionalities, where the staircase - besides its inherent functional responsibility - offers its steps so we can comfortably sit on them.
O programa bastante elementar organiza-se ao ritmo e intensidade da luz que atravessa as paredes periféricas pelas aberturas existentes assegurando iluminação e ventilação aos espaços vitais da casa.
The project, which is very basic, is organised according to the rhythm and intensity of the light passing through the existing openings of the peripheral walls, ensuring lighting and ventilation to all living spaces of the house.
Os escassos recursos impõem acabamentos brutos, conferindo aos materiais estruturais o acabamento final. O constante respeito pela pré-existência e a sua identidade reflete-se numa essencial interpretação tectónica. O chão da “loja” outrora em terra batida materializa-se num contínuo betão aparente, os soalhos e carpintarias bastante danificados rendem-se a novas madeiras, num proveito das suas possibilidades sensoriais.
The limited resources require raw finishes, giving the structural materials a final finish. The constant respect for its pre-existence and identity reflect an important tectonic interpretation. The floor of the "shop" - once a dirt floor - materialises in a continuous concrete surface, and the wood floors and badly damaged woodwork yield to new woods, taking advantage of their sensory possibilities.
