New Station Forecourt
The most frequented bus and tram stop for Leipzigs local transport service, the LVB, located in the forecourt of Leipzig Central Station, has been thoroughly renovated and modernised. Twelve tram lines and numerous bus routes transport 70,000 passengers through the forecourt daily. The primary goals of the restructuring were to unify the area between the central station and city with the combined bus and tram stop, without overpowering the historical railway station. The aim was to transform the forecourt from the six-lane thoroughfare it had become into an attractive urban square, reuniting the station with its city.
The total area of the renovation was more than 10,000 square meters; the number of platforms was reduced from four to three, thereby achieving more space for the commuters in the same area. The whole location is now more approachable and welcoming. The service and retail pavilions were also renewed.
The platforms have been raised in order to provide comfortable and unrestricted access for all users. They are covered by a 4.4 metre high steel roof construction, a break in the structure indicates the walkway across the platforms and links into the central axis of the railway station. Backlit synthetic panels connected to the underside of the roof construction provide lighting. 47 illuminated glass objects have also been installed on the platforms; simultaneously acting as seating and accent lighting.
