L’idea: Abbiamo interpretato il tema del Festival “L’energia nel giardino” come una riflessione sulla gratitudine e meraviglia per la generosità della natura. Una singola pianta, un arancio (Citrus x sinensis), è posizionato al centro del giardino, ai suoi piedi 50.000 arance (sfere di plastica), la somma dei raccolti di 100 anni di una singola pianta.
Abbiamo scelto l’arancio come pianta simbolica, dato che questa è stata coltivata da oltre 4000 anni collegante l’Oriente con l’Occidente a più riprese nella storia. Gli agrumi sono il simbolo dell’Europa del Sud, ma anche della Cina e delll’Oriente.
La leggenda narra che le arance siano state portate per la prima volta in Europa dai navigatori portoghesi nel XIV secolo. Durante le nostre ricerche che abbiamo fatto per questo giardino abbiamo scoperto che in molti dialetti italiani ci si riferisce alle arance con i termoni di "portügàl", "purtügàl" or "portogàl" un chiaro tributo alle sue origini. Ci interessava l’idea di esprimere un concetto che contemporaneamente universale, ma che potesse avere una declinazione specifica per il sito nel quale viene realizzato.
La percezione e l’uso del giardino: Il giardino appare come un “mare” di arance. Il suo impatto visivo è ottenuto attraverso il contrasto tra l’elemento naturale centrale (l’arancio) e l’artifico delle palle di plastica che ricoprono il suolo. Il giardino può essere semplicemente osservato o “vissuto” camminando direttamente sulle “arance”. Ci immaginiamo che ciò attiverà la curiosità e la voglia di gioco dei bambini.
ORANGE POWER - We have interpreted the Festival’s theme “Energy in the Garden” as a theme of gratitude and marvel for the generosity of nature. One single plant, an orange tree (Citrus x sinensis), is placed at the centre of the garden, at its foot 50.000 oranges (plastic balls) the harvest of a single orange plant in 100 years. We have chosen the orange tree as a symbolic plant for it has been cultivated for over 4000 years and also as it is a plant that has linked the East and the West many time in history. Citruses are emblems of the Southern Europe, but also of China and the Orient.
Legend has it that oranges were first brought to Europe by Portuguese sailors in the 14th century. During the research we did for this garden we found out that in many Italian dialects oranges are referred to as "portügàl", "purtügàl" or "portogàl" a clear tribute to its origins. We liked the idea of expressing a concept that is universal and its site-specific interpretation . The garden will appear to the visitor as a “see” of oranges. Its visual impact is achieved by the contrast of the natural element in the centre (the orange tree) and the artifice of the plastic balls covering the soil. A playful garden that nevertheless hides a sinister message recalling an ecological issue: a new generation of plants forced to produce fruits that never decay, the plant specimen genetically altered to achieve ‘perfection’
